In conversation with psychedelic songwriter Sands as he shares his brand new track, ‘Burning Man’

London-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sands will be releasing his brand new double A-side single, ‘Tomorrow’s Gone’ / ‘Burning Man’, on November 30, via Spaghetti Sounds and has just shared ‘Burning Man’, a taste of this double-whammy single available at the end of the month. A huge fan of vinyl, it was this love of records that started Andrew Sands AKA Sands on his journey of writing music and honing his very own sound that effortlessly fuses psychedelic rock, folk and electronic music.

Listen to ‘Burning Man’ by Sands, below.

Set the tone for us. Why the arts?

They make me feel good I guess. Or bad. Hence they move things.

Which comes first when you’re producing – the sound or the idea?

It can be one triggering the other.

Does your material feature any collaborations?

Not in the writing process. In the mixing this time around I’ve worked with Youth and Michael Rendall, who had worked as well on track for my previous EP

What’s on your current playlist?

Led Zeppelin, Jungle, Elvis Presley, Prince, Black Sabbath, Kraftwerk, Neil Young, Queens Of The Stone Age, Mount Kimbie.

Tell us about the chemistry you have with your fans on stage.

It’s a mystery to me as well.

What techniques do you experiment with to get your original sound?

Trial and error I guess. And listening back the day after to see if I still like what I did or if it needs something else.

Take us through a day in the recording studio.

Listening to some music first to set the mood of the day, then on with the session. It can be recording or mixing.

Was there a specific moment in your life where you thought, “this is what I want to do”?

Not really, I think it naturally evolved to be so over the years (and through the woods).

What do you keep close by while you’re playing a set?

A drink.

Any emerging artists on your radar?

There’s always something new – It might even be just new to me – I’m on about. That’s one of the things I love the most about music. So far it still surprises me.

What gets your creative juices flowing?

Living.

Take us through your collection of gear, tech or software that accompanies your creative expression.

Acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, pedals, amps, mics, computer, daw, plugins… It’s already got boring mentioning things! Well in the end I need them, apparently.

How have you refined your craft since you entered the industry?

With patience and, somehow, perseverance.

Breakdown the news for us: what can we expect from you this year?

New fantastic releases.
