DJ and producer Batu has opened a free-to-access community focussed music studio in their base city of Bristol. Named First Light Studio, the new space was launched in collaboration with Dr. Martens. With a focus on empowering the local arts scene, First Light Studio is the first of its kind for Bristol. It seeks to give emerging talent the opportunity to play, experiment and refine their craft in a professionally equipped space.

According to their website, First Light Studio “aims to provide a valuable stepping stone for music producers to take their music from ideas to fully fledged professional productions.” The studio is acoustically treated and includes a fully kitted DJ booth. Artists are offered unsupervised time to experiment with the equipment. A full gear list is provided on their site, and artists are urged to apply for studio time.

Located at Bristol’s Trinity Centre, a community arts venue, the studio’s mission statement is informed by the culture of its surroundings. First Light will also be offering free DJ and production workshops. According to Mixmag, a lineup of Bristol’s key players such as Hodge, Elder Island, and Mix Nights have been tapped as tutors. With a strong focus on inclusivity, the studio is open to artists working across all genres and levels of skill.

You can find out more about the studio here, and join their mailing list for information on upcoming workshops.
