Interview: Five minutes with Jet-G

UK-based Jet-G is the combined force of electronic producers Jolliffe (on synth, programming and production), ECKOES (on vocals and production), GENTRY (on Piano, synth and programming) as well as Tony Terror (on synth, programming and production).

They have just released their latest single ‘Give Me Air’ which came to fruition during the Covid lockdown, in an impromptu recording session.

We chat to them in the wake of the release, for a window into their process:

Set the tone for us. Why the arts?

It’s the only place we can create, express and be ourselves. It’s where freedom lives.

Which comes first when you’re producing – the sound or the idea?

It’s always different. ‘Give Me Air’ started from a piano idea, the next single from a vocal melody.

Does your material feature any collaborations?

Our material IS a collaboration. All of us are individual artists, we just really enjoy playing together. Then decided to do it more, then publicly.

What’s on your current playlist?

Kinnship, Laura Mvula, Brittany Howard, Kelly Lee Owens

What techniques do you experiment with to get your original sound?

We really believe music comes from everywhere and everything. So in the studio, we’ll press record and literally walk around hitting things, capturing sounds from everyday life & blending them into our songs.

Take us through a day in the recording studio.

No two days are the same but we like to start at the piano and go from there. There’s a lot of laughing, and good food

Was there a specific moment in your life where you thought, “this is what I want to do”?

GENTRY: On stage at the Westcliff centre in Clacton on Sea, age 6 playing keyboard.

ECKOES: Just everyday.

What do you keep close by while you’re playing a set?

GENTRY: Filtered water

JOLLIFFE: Sparkling water

ECKOES: Wine

Any emerging artists on your radar?

ECKOES: I recently discovered a German producer called BAHN – he’s incredible.

Jolliffe: DJ ADHD, Lee Scott & Hyroglifics

What gets your creative juices flowing?

Going to gigs & feeling how music should be experienced. And we love getting out of London into some greenery to reset & write.

Take us through your collection of gear, tech or software that accompanies your creative expression.

Upright piano, Abelton live & push, Moog Matriach, Nord Stage 3, Korg Minilogue, Roland TR8, WMD Geiger counter, MacBook Pro

Any side projects you’re working on?

All of our own artist projects

How have you refined your craft since you entered the industry?

You just get to know yourself better and focus on what works, and what doesn’t. You also put in your 10,000 hours.

Breakdown the news for us: what can we expect from you this year?

The next single’s out in Nov with some visuals, and a live show.

Famous last words?

“This’ll be fun”
