Interview: Five Minutes with Evon Rose

Austrian band Evon Rose have released their track, ‘Something More’ via Timbits Records on the 22nd of November. Following the track shortly was the release of the music video which features footage from the short film “Lacrimosa“, directed by Tanja Mairitsch. The track explores themes of the afterlife with optimism and naivety, both of which are reflected in the young actors starring in the video.

Comprised of Peter Nadasdi on drums, Byron Cortes on Bass, Jonas Skielboe on guitar and Andreas Schuster’s hard-hitting vocals tying them all together, Evon Rose embraces all things indie rock. After a life-changing experience, Schuster launched himself into the world of music, needing to share the aftermath with the world.

Curious about the life-changing experience and what more he had to share, we sat down with lead singer Andreas Schuster for an exclusive interview.

Set the tone for us. Why the arts?

Creating music is what fulfils me and how I can express myself best.

Which comes first when you’re producing – the sound or the idea?

Can be one, the other or both at the same time. Sometimes it actually just starts with a feeling. Sometimes I play around with my guitar and suddenly something clicks. And other times I wake up in the middle of the night and have it all there, singing the tune and already some lyrics to go with it.

Does your material feature any collaborations?

On our first album, we collaborated with Rusanda Panfili, a very talented violinist who is currently playing as a Soloist with Hans Zimmer. I wanted to give some songs the touch of string instruments. She’s a wonderful Co-Writer aswell and very creative. It’s always a huge pleasure making music with her. She’ll also be featured on one of our upcoming songs.

What’s on your current playlist?

Sam Fender – “That Sound” and Boy and Bear – “Suck on Light”. Love that Aussie Band! And I just re-discovered Uncle Lucius – “Keep The Wolves Away”. Wonderful lyrics.

Tell us about the chemistry you have with your fans on stage.

I love the feeling when I’m in sync with the audience and if the audience fully joins us on that journey of emotions between uptempo high energy songs and then drifting into smooth and melancholic ballads.

What techniques do you experiment with to get your original sound?

I bring my ideas and thoughts to the band. Together we search for the right sound to match the emotions of the song. Sharing ideas with my band and trying out new sounds together is a vital part of the creative process.

Take us through a day in the recording studio.

Relaxed coffee with our producer, checking the sound and setup and just get started. Sometimes we’re done in a few hours, sometimes it takes us all night trying to get it right.

Was there a specific moment in your life where you thought, “this is what I want to do”?

It was 2015 and I was due for a lung operation. On the night before I was at home and wrote the song “River of Life”. I thought: If there’s something I would regret not having done in my life it’s bfinging my songs to be and sharing them with the world.

What do you keep close by while you’re playing a set?

A bottle of water and anywhere I can, I take my favourite carpet on stage.

Any emerging artists on your radar?

Ro Bergman, The LLA (Tim Tercero).

What gets your creative juices flowing?

When I’m together with other musicians and with people that inspire me. But also intense experiences and feelings.

Take us through your collection of gear, tech or software that accompanies your creative expression.

My guitar, a (paper)notebook and Voice Memo on iPhone. I’m really bad with technology, but luckily my band helps me out with that 😉

Any side projects you’re working on?

No. Full focus on Evon Rose 😉

How have you refined your craft since you entered the industry?

Well, I hope I still do and always will. On all levels. Through daily practice, vocal coaching and being on stage as much as possible – The response from the audience is the best feedback you can get.

Breakdown the news for us: what can we expect from you next year?

We are planning to release a new album in 2020.

Famous last words?

Thank you and good night!
