Bringing the fresh tones of summer months, Freddie Future provides a lush, escapive release with his latest single. ‘Loving You (So High)’ was made public last week and is the first track from a new project the musician is currently working on. The single, accompanied by a stellar music video that you can catch below, was produced by Anthony Kalabretta: another producer we’ve had the pleasure of sitting down with. We always love finding a musician who understands the importance of the art and the way it can shape our experiences as humans. Naturally, we were eager to sit down with the Toronto-based artist and learn more about him. Catch it all in the exclusive interview below.
Set the tone for us. Why the arts?
It’s about connecting with my audience and expressing myself through the creation of music. Art is life and it can be so powerful. I don’t know where I’d be without it.
Which comes first when you’re producing – the sound or the idea?
The idea first. From there, I’ll go to some vibey chords on a synth and see where that takes me.
Does your material feature any collaborations?
When the time is right, I’d be down to feature artists on my tracks but I haven’t yet. However, I often love collaborating with other artists to create songs.

Tell us about the chemistry you have with your fans on stage.
Honestly, there’s a beautiful exchange of energy from the crowd at my shows. I appreciate every person who’s there showing love and support, so I give my fans just as much energy in return. That’s what makes my shows so special. It’s a full experience.
What techniques do you experiment with to get your original sound?
I know what kind of sounds I like and what I’m drawn to. I let my producer make their magic by creating original sounds from scratch based on references I bring to the table. Being part of this process really inspires me to start creating the song.
Take us through a day in the recording studio.
A big part of it is just showing up. Once I’m at the studio and ready to create, I make sure there’s a vibe there. I start with an idea and then experiment with some interesting chords on the keys or in Ableton and let the song guide me. It has to be organic and you have to feel it. I try my best to never be attached to an idea. The best thing you can do is serve the song and everything naturally falls into place.
Was there a specific moment in your life where you thought, “this is what I want to do”?
I think once I committed to making music long term, there was no turning back.
What do you keep close by while you’re playing a set?
Lots of water!
Any emerging artists on your radar?

What gets your creative juices flowing?
Listening to inspiring music and creating playlists gets me inspired! I currently have one called “Freddie Future Faves.”
Take us through your collection of gear, tech or software that accompanies your creative expression.
I work out of numerous studios that vary in size so the gear always varies. The software can vary too but it’s usually Ableton. To me, it’s more about the people I’m with and the vibe.
Any side projects you’re working on?
I’m all in for this project but I’m always down to write for other artists when I have some time.
How have you refined your craft since you entered the industry?
Writing better and better songs. I’ve been continually working on my craft and also linking up with other like-minded artists and producers.
Breakdown the news for us: what can we expect from you this year?
A LOT of new music! I’ve really taken my time to make sure these new songs are the best they can be. I’m hyped!
