Inspired by the likes of Cassius and Daft Punk, Mike McFly has experimented with a range of genres and production styles before settling down and becoming one with his true love; dirty Bass music. Mike’s melancholic, beefy production style, and attention to detail in his tracks, are quickly gaining notoriety in the underground scene. His credo: “if they move, they approve”, allow for some pretty straightforward 4×4 productions.

Milkshake’ grabs your attention form the get go with an upbeat synth heavy bass line accompanied by the repeated “milkshake, girl you make my belly ache”. One thing is for sure, this is one drink you do not want to pass up! Link to song at end of post.

We spoke to Mike McFly to learn more about the quirky artist behind ‘Milkshake’:

To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?

I would say I am right in between Tech House and Bass House – I try to blend this with experimental, quirky ideas, to see if I can make it work. I call that the “Flysawce”.

Which three albums have influenced you the most creatively?

I would say, I am mostly influenced by the sounds of labels such as Dirtybird, Relief, Confession and This Ain’t Bristol. But if you were gonna press me on this then – Daft Punk’s “Discovery” & Justice’s “Cross”, would be the ones that inspired me to pick up producing (again).

Take us through your songwriting process. Are there any particular steps you take when putting music together?

Well, lately I try to keep this very disciplined. I start with a beat and a bassline, add some crazy stuff, to see if I can make it work, and once I have a loop that will not bore me, I start building. Building the drop, break etc. Then, I have noticed, I end up remixing what I had. I’ll have all the sounds picked out, but I always end up thinking there is a better song hidden in there. And most of the times I am right. So most of what you end up hearing is two or three “remixes” away from the concept which I started initially.

Studio work and music creation or performing and interacting with a live audience, which do you prefer?

Studio work. It’s a great internal struggle. But you feel so satisfied when you win it.

Any new artists on your radar?

Well, yeah a lot. I have known these guys for a while but they have been making steps. I’m a big fan of Lucati, who I did a record with that ended up on Relief. The guy is a beast when it comes to productivity. I really like what Steady Rock is doing right now, but really tons of guys deserve a mention here. I feel I am in a network of a lot of people who possess the qualities to “make” it.

What has been your most memorable performance so far?

Well, I am hoping my first gig abroad will be my most memorable. I am slated to play in Italy some time in September, which I am looking forward to very much.

And which performance would you prefer to forget?

My first!

If you could collaborate with, or perform alongside any artist, who would it be? And why?

I like a lot of the guys on the labels which I mentioned before. Anyone from the Dirtybird stable would do honestly. But if I were to choose, I would love to collaborate with the big boss man Claude VonStroke. A guy can dream right?

Tell us about any upcoming shows or releases you have in the pipeline.

I’ve got a release coming up on House of Hustle pretty soon, that is going to feature collaborations with some of my good buddies. I also have one coming out with Hood Rich on the very cool Psycho Disco imprint. Other then that, I am in the midst of confirming some releases, but I can’t tell you anything about that yet. I’ll be dropping some free stuff very soon as well.

Famous last words…

I knew it was you Fredo.
