[PREMIERE] The Hacker and Commuter – Roentgen PT1

Fellow French electroclash artists The Hacker and Commuter are preparing to release their collaborative EP, Roentgen via Cultivated Electronics, due on 14 June. Across three tracks of punchy electro, the artists experiment with vintage synths to formulate a machine funk informed by the technology of Chernobyl, with names like Roentgen (a unit of measurement for the exposure of X-rays and gamma rays) and RBMK (Chernobyl’s nuclear power reactor).

Roentgen PT1 is the latest track to be shared from the upcoming EP and immediately sets the tone for what is to come. As an exercise in recreating the moment before the explosion, the aesthetic choices made by The Hacker and Commuter on Roentgen PT1 are inspired. The vintage synthesisers locate the experience within the era, and the crafting of these sounds to create an unerring tension places us in the room as if we were one of the physicists watching imminent disaster unfold, being unable to do anything about it.

Roentgen also features a remix of RBMK by MMT-8, otherwise known as Ed Upton of DMX Krew. Listen to Roentgen PT1 below, and preorder the EP here
