It was during a 2018 interview with Paper magazine that pioneering DJ and producer SOPHIE was asked if she believed in God. “Yes,” she replied, “God is trans.”
Beyond her gamechanging work in electronic music, SOPHIE was an important voice for the transgender communtiy. In honour of her memory and invaluable contribution to the trans discourse, a group of SOPHIE’s creative collaborators have launched an art auction titled God is Trans.
The auction features an incredible collection of work and memorabilia, including jewelry designed by Emily Schubert exclusively for SOPHIE and worn on the album cover for Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides. Also on auction are pieces from Nick Harwood, the director of SOPHIE’s stunning music video for It’s Okay to Cry.
100% of the money raised from the auction will go directly to the Trans Justice Funding Project. The organisation provides grassroots support for trans justice initiatives in the US. According to their website, they have distributed over $4.5 million over the past eight years towards trans leadership against “racism, economic injustice, transmisogyny, ableism, immigration, incarceration, and other intersecting oppressions.”
SOPHIE passed away earlier this year after a tragic accident in Athens. Since her passing, many have acknowledged her visionary contributions to the evolution of pop and electronic music.
God is Trans runs until May 23. You can visit the auction online here, and donate directly to the Trans Justice Funding Project here.
